DB3i.jpg (31664 bytes) This page comes from Denny (Bear) Barela of the 63rd IPCT with the Americal in 1971. The training of Tracker Teams took place in Fort Gordon from 1969 on.  They were under the "umbrella" of Military Police.  Denny is sitting on the ground beneath the sign - Who are the others? Just in from Bob Konarske - the guy in Civvies is Lloyd Pursley. Only one to go, guys! From Lloyd Pursley - the guy on the left is Peter Burghart.
DB4c.jpg (31055 bytes) It was a difficult task to simulate the conditions of Viet Nam in Georgia, but the Army tried it's best!  Here is a group of Tracker Dog Handler trainees off to find the "elusive enemy".  However, the US Army was NOT able to round up a batch of Gurkha for training purposes!
DB5.jpg (19866 bytes) This was the home of the Tracker Dogs who were "green".   They and their trainee Handlers learned the techniques of Tracker together.     Note the sign - at the bottom, it says "Authorized Personnel Only".
DB2b.jpg (32984 bytes) This is Denny and Ince (6B40) in Da Nang in July of 1971.  Ince was a mainstay of the 63rd IPCT and had been handled by Phil Hooks '68-'69, Paul Marshall '70-'71.

Update from Phillip Hooks 09 July 2009:      "Denney Barella and my dog Ince"
DB6a.jpg (27461 bytes) Members of the 63rd IPCT - Americal hard at work off-loading a liquid beverage containment unit - we don't have the Army Inventory Number - and wonder if this one worked!  Also note the Vehicle is one of the Fleet assigned to the Combat Trackers.  Is that Hong Kong Mountain in the background?  Did it still have a certain shield on it? David Murphy is on the left lifting the "unit" - photo was taken at Danang.  The Team was given a tin shack for 12 guys - that's what the Marines had been using until Americal came in to relieve them.

Update from Phillip Hooks 09 July 2009: "Joe Frank on the far right lifting the containment unit and pretty sure Gary Souder is standing in the truck on the left".
DB7b.jpg (20881 bytes) This is another photo of the 63rd IPCT with part of CTT Fleet.  Can anyone put some names to the faces?  Bobby Konarske sent this part of the ID - from L to R: Detter, Unknown, Harold Manbeck, Unknown

Update from Phillip Hooks 09 July 2009: "Mike Senik second from the left and Mike McGee far right (4th from left)"
DB1b.jpg (26840 bytes) This photo comes from a UPI article which was captioned, "Luke Likes People."  Mildren Keith was Luke's handler in 1971.  At  this point in time, they were working with the 196th Inf. Bde.  The 63rd IPCT had 31 men and 10 Labs according to this article.  The Teams worked everywhere no matter what their original Infantry attachment.
